Midi merge can get overloaded with really heavy midi streams like multitimbral 16 channels at once type stuff. You could build the 16f88 version on perf. You can get a usb pic programmer from china via ebay for $10.

The midi keyboard has these connections: USB midi out (from DAW usb to midi keyboard to midi out to synth) The USB midi out doesn't work standalone. So what I want to do is merge both midi outputs on the midi keyboard. If I turn midi monitoring off in Ableton, theoretically, there won't be any doubles of midi signals.

USB simplified my setup considerably allowing me to replace 2 midi cables with 1 USB cable per device and eliminate my midi splitter (Kenton thru 25) and merger (Kenton merge 8) entirely. It also meant I didn't have to remember the midi channel of any device (they are all on channel 1, since they have their own porta).

Whatever, make sure you get a merge (or thru box if you ever have the need) box that lets you add power to the device. I got stung by this with a "self powered" MIDI thru box that worked on all my old gear that sends MIDI buss power over one of the pins, but a lot of new gear - (you know who you are Moog Phatty!) does not send MIDI buss power at all so if you need a merge/thru on it, you are.

3 Answers Sorted by: 2 No, combining them in hardware is not possible. Normal way of doing this is to have two MIDI inputs, and two UARTs on a microcontroller receiving messages from both inputs. Then the microprocessor merges the messages so that correct MIDI data bytes belong to correct MIDI status bytes.

I want to build a circuit that will live hidden in my Eurorack case, and take MIDI from two inputs (Expert Sleepers ES9 & physical DIN port in the case), and distribute it to four outputs (ALM Pam's New Workout, Expert Sleepers Disting, LPZW Tram8 and Squarp Rample) The MIDI Thru distribution section seems simple enough.

Daniel This is an interesting approach, Daniel. Did you get any further with it? It hadn't actually occurred to me to use multiple CPUs with a shared flag, but it makes a lot of sense. Trying to do it in software on a single CPU seems to raise more problems. Would each CPU run the same code?
